Valerie Baker Memorial Award
The Valerie Baker Memorial Award recognises excellence in professional practice in the General Insurance intermediary sector including both broking and underwriting agencies. It is awarded nationally once every year and is sponsored by Gold Seal, the Steadfast Group and AIMS and presented in conjunction with Lloyd's Australia.
Last year’s Award winner, Daniel Bullock of Safeguard Insurance Brokers in South Australia, has just returned from his London trip and summed up his experience of winning the Valerie Baker Memorial Award by saying, “The contacts I have made both here in Australia and in London and their willingness to assist me was an experience in itself. The high regard in which they hold the Valerie Baker Memorial Award winner was apparent with everyone I met. This carried through to London where I was fortunate enough to meet a range of people from senior Lloyd’s brokers through to the British Insurance Brokers Association CEO and the Deputy Chairman of Lloyds. The people I have met and their roles in the industry is eye opening.”
He added, “If you are thinking about nominating for the Award, do it. I can’t speak highly enough about what I’ve experienced.”
Daniel also took the opportunity to enjoy the many attractions of the UK by extending his stay to include some tourist time with his wife and family.
The Award memorialises the achievements Valerie made during her lifetime towards the professionalism of the Insurance Broking and Underwriting Agency industries and continues her work in encouraging high potential individuals.
The prize is based in London to acknowledge and underline the importance of London Market knowledge to Australian intermediaries.
The winner will receive an exclusive opportunity to acquaint themselves with the London Market and Lloyd’s operations, the heart of the insurance industry worldwide. The prize includes:
- Expenses-paid trip to London - business class air fares and accommodation
- An education experience tailored to the winner's interests
- Focused learning activities with key underwriters and brokers
- Meet with senior managers at Lloyd's of London
Finalists will also have access to 2016 winner Daniel Bullock for guidance on the interview process.
Applications for 2017 are now open and will close on 1 March 2017. Nominees will be shortlisted and interviewed by a judging panel who will then select a winner based on both their interview and application.
