Tips and Traps for Broker WebsitesGenerally speaking, things to watch out for in web pages are as follows:
- Check that your AFSL and AR numbers appear; ·
- If the company is trading under a business, name ensure the full corporate name appears somewhere;
- Check for general advice on retail products – if general advice is given, the general advice warning should appear and a copy of the FSG should be on the webpage;
- If applications for retail products are available online, ensure a PDS is also available;
- Check for misleading and deceptive statements – these could be anything that cannot be factually supported (or which may be factual but for which no evidence is available) – avoid saying ‘leading provider’, ‘biggest insurer’, ‘low cost’, ‘cost effective’, ‘lowest prices’ etc.
- Check for special words e.g;
- “General insurance broker” (for which authorization is required);
- “Independent” (which may only be used in limited circumstances where commissions are fully rebated to the client; and
- ”Free” (use of which is generally frowned on by the ACCC).
