Belinda Scott, Director, BJS Insurance Brokers was awarded the first Valerie Baker Memorial Award. Gold Seal and Steadfast Group announced the winner of the inaugural Valerie Baker Memorial Award at the 16th Annual Steadfast Convention in Melbourne in 2014.
The judges were impressed with Belinda’s excellent track record in growing a successful business from a single office in regional Victoria to the five offices it has around the country today, and her commitment to ongoing professional development and industry contribution.
Belinda departed for London to take up the prize in late April. The first part of the Award was an industry short course at the Chartered Insurance Institute followed by opportunities to see Lloyd’s and the London insurance market at first hand.
“Open to both Brokers and Underwriting Agencies, the Award attracted a high calibre of nominees” said Sheila Baker, Managing Director of Gold Seal and chair of the judging panel. “We were bowled over by the quality of all the nominees, not just the finalists. It was a difficult decision for us, and we laboured over it for some time. We had the cream of Australia’s insurance talent in front of us. Valerie would have been very proud.”
Award nominations were shortlisted and the finalists interviewed by the judging panel. The panel consisted of John Phillips, ex-CEO of Steadfast, Adrian Humphreys, Managing Director of Lloyd’s Australia and Sheila Baker, Managing Director of Gold Seal. The nominees were judged on the basis of the selection criteria for the Award – ethics and values, business success, client relationships, teamwork, innovation and entrepreneurship, and industry contribution.
The other finalists were:
- Sharon Fox Slater – EBM Insurance Brokers
- Ben Goodall – Griffiths Goodall Insurance Brokers
- Ben Johnston Bradford – Specialist Underwriting Agencies
- Julie Pernecker – All Parks Insurance
