Finalists announced for 6th Valerie Baker Memorial Award 2019
The finalists for the prestigious Valerie Baker Memorial Award have been announced. The Valerie Baker Memorial Award recognises excellence in professional practice in the General Insurance intermediary sector, including both broking and underwriting agencies. It is awarded nationally and is sponsored jointly by Gold Seal, AIMS and the Steadfast Group with notable support from Lloyd’s Australia and Lloyd’s of London.
The 2019 finalists are:
- Beau Munn – Origin Insurance
- Belinda Smith – Western Insurance Brokers
- Kim Gilbert – Zenith Insurance Services
- Lisa Carter – Clear Insurance
The winner will receive a career enhancing opportunity to see first-hand how the London Market operates. The prize includes:
- Expenses-paid trip to London – business class air fares and accommodation
- An education experience tailored to the winner’s special interests
- Career enhancing meetings and networking with key underwriters and brokers
- Thorough familiarisation of Lloyd’s of London and meeting with senior managers
- $1000 AUD spending money

Here is a snapshot of the finalists’ achievements:
Beau is the executive director of Origin Insurance Brokers. He started his career in the insurance industry at age of 18 and had his own brokerage by the age of 21. Beau is a young Aboriginal businessman who is passionate about his family heritage and wants to be a role model for other indigenous youths looking for a corporate career in Australia.
Belinda started her career by joining the family business in 2001, working her way up from admin duties to managing a client base. In 2013, she took the plunge and started her own business as an Authorised Representative with Western Insurance Brokers in regional Victoria.
Kim is a director of Zenith Insurance Services with 40+ years in the insurance industry. In 2001, He founded Zenith Insurance Services with 2 other directors. Since its inception, Zenith has grown to 26 direct staff with 5 authorised representatives servicing clients throughout Australia from their WA office. In 2018, Kim won the NIBA Broker of the Year award. He, and his team at Zenith, have been behind a number of philanthropic projects which have benefited diverse communities worldwide, making Zenith truly a socially responsible corporation.
Lisa is the owner director of Clear Insurance Pty Ltd, and a CAR with Insurance Advisernet. She has over 20 years broking experience with a deep technical understanding of insurance, a strong client service focus and a commercial savvy mindset.
Finalists will be interviewed by the judging panel:
- Chris Mackinnon, General Representative Lloyd’s Australia
- Jim Rudkin, representing the Steadfast Group
- Martin McAvenna, representing the AIMS Group
- Sheila Baker, Managing Director of Gold Seal (chair)
- Rocco Pirrello, 2018 finalist from GSA Insurance Brokers
Following the interviews they will select a winner based on their interviews, references and application. The prize is taken up in London to acknowledge and underline the importance of London Market knowledge to Australian intermediaries and due to Valerie Baker’s affiliation and achievements there.
The award will be announced at a function to be held at Lloyd’s Australia’s premises on 28 August 2019.
